Obverse Rafael Yglesias Castro (1861–1924), Costa Rican politician who served as President of Costa Rica for two consecutive periods from 1894 to 1902. “Guaria Morada” (Cattleya skinneri), a purple orchid. It was designated the National Flower of Costa Rica on 15th of June, 1939
Reverse Allegory scene of Teatro Nacional (mural painting by Aleardo J. Villa, 1897), also known as the “Allegory of coffee and banana” which decorates the ceiling of the National Theater in San Jose.
Comment From 1972 and before, the painter’s name was erroneously written as T. Villa. That was corrected in 1973, when it was written as J. Villa.
