Comment La Demajagua is the name of a plantation and sugar cane processing complex, property of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes. On October 1868, started revolution, freeing his slaves and inviting then to join the movement. On same month, installations and plantations are destroyed by Spanish forces, partly as revenge to Céspedes. Debris of the factory kept on ground, and a jagüey tree grew thru a big gear wheel, as shown on the main image of obverse.

This fact was taken as a symbol of the determination of Cubans to face annoyances and rise again and stronger.
